Are you a FIXED or GROWTH minded person?

I can remember the day I was asked this question. I was a Junior in high school and my volleyball coach Shayne Lehman sat us down before a practice and asked us, “Do you think you were born with the ability to play volleyball or do you think you have over time become the player you have? Do you think that you are only as good as the ability you were born with?” My answer then shocks the person I am today. LOL! In a very confident voice I responded with, “You are born athletic and able! You can’t out train genetics.” BAHAHAHAHA What an idiot I was! My coach just looked at me like, ‘You teenage fool!’ Thank you Jesus for placing amazing coaches and mentors in my life to show me the way!

The truth is this: We are incredible creatures and we are only limited by what we believe of ourselves – not our genetics or natural abilities. What is more important than genetics, (although don’t get me wrong those are important), is our self-talk. There are two types of self-talk. First is positive self-talk. The ‘I can(s)’. Second is negative self-talk. The ‘I can’t(s)’. The words we tell ourselves over and over become what we believe. So ask yourself, would you rather be an ‘I can’ or an ‘I can’t’? Also, almost equally important is the type of people we surround ourselves with. The words they use are no different than the positive self-talk or negative self-talk. Just remember this, there is a reason why your parents and coaches told you the phrase, ‘I can’t’ is prohibited.

Knowing how incredible we are, and using positive self-talk, come at life with a growth mindset. Always know there is room for improvement, learn from your mistakes and encourage others. Reflect on life and do it often; then create a plan to be better or go at something that is hard for you from a different angle.

DO NOT LET YOUR MIND LIMIT THE AMAZING POSSIBILITIES THAT SURROUND YOU!

The best way to plunge forward is to surround yourself with people who believe in you and build you up. That way when you start to drift to a fixed mindset they can encourage you and point you back in the right direction.

In your corner,
Krista
